Stellenbosch is a bustling, well-known centre for education, with a university of international repute and several schools, including some of the oldest and best in the country. The PJ Olivier Art Centre is housed in the old Rhenish Institute on the Braak. The Rembrandt van Rijn Art Foundation, established in 1964, is housed in an old manor house. Stellenbosch offers plenty charming shops, boutique shopping centres, jewellers, curio shops and other interesting businesses. Stellenbosch is synonymous with the oldest Wine Route in the country. The Stellenbosch Wine of Origin area comprises of more than 100 cellars. Most are open to the public and some of the finest, award-winning wines are available. Wine farms have mostly been handed down from generation to generation. The wine of the region is truly of a very high standard and regularly wins international awards. Guided Wine Tasting Tours are a regular for any visitor and here you have a choice of the old world charm, or modern large estates, where they focus on drawing large numbers of tourists. Wine is Stellenbosch and if one looks at the roots, this must truly be a Mecca for any wine-lover. Most of these farms are surrounded by the natural beauty of nature, with some of the most spectacular mountains. This again leads to endless possibilities of scenic and sightseeing trips. With the vineyards as backdrop and the ever-changing colour of the leaves, the landscapes are constantly transformed. Harvesting time is normally from late January to early April and the smell of the shells hangs in the air and creates an air of excitement and is something to be experienced!

Directions

From Cape Town International Airport take N2 turn-off to Somerset West. Proceed on N2 highway. Take Baden Powell/Stellenbosch turn-off (Exit 33). At the T-junction turn left on to the R310 to Stellenbosch and continue all the way until you reach a T-junction. Turn right to Stellenbosch. At second traffic light turn right into Dorp Street (Shell garage on right-hand corner.). Continue straight down Dorp Street. Road bends in natural bend to the right. After bend take first left into The Avenue. Continue straight until second stop street. Turn left into Coetzenburg Road, Beauclair is the first house on the left-hand side, 1 Coetzenburg Road, Stellenbosch.
